How a self-serve dog wash works

You bring the dog. The wash supplies a raised tub, warm water, shampoo, towels and usually a dryer, and someone else cleans the hair out of the drain.

  1. Pay at the counter or the machine. Most places charge $10 to $20 a dog, or buy a block of minutes at car-wash bays.
  2. Walk your dog up the ramp. A tether clip keeps them in the tub while you work.
  3. Rinse, shampoo, rinse again. The sprayer reaches the undercoat far better than a bathtub faucet.
  4. Dry and go. Use the high-velocity dryer or towels, and leave the mess behind.

Common questions

How much does a self-serve dog wash cost?

Usually $10 to $20 per dog, with shampoo, towels and a dryer included. Pet store tubs sit at the lower end. Car-wash pet bays often charge by the minute, around $1 a minute.

What should I bring?

A leash and a few treats. Most washes supply everything else. If a listing says "bring your own shampoo," pack shampoo and a towel.

Do I need an appointment?

Almost never. Self-serve tubs are first come, first served. Weekend afternoons are the busiest times.

Is a self-serve wash better than the bathtub at home?

For most dogs, yes. Raised tubs save your back, the sprayer gets deeper into the coat, and the dryer cuts drying time. Your bathroom stays clean.
